SUMMARY:ISCA Webinar: Building Great Board Meeting Agendas: Intentionally Getting Into the Weeds
DESCRIPTION:In this Q&A session\, governance expert Cathy Trower will provide guidance on planning for and building great board meeting agendas to ensure appropriate oversight and engage trustees strategically and generatively. The perennial topic of board meeting agendas requires us to get into specifics—what might seem “weedy\,” but so necessary—around such questions as: \nWho should provide input on board meeting agendas and what is the ideal timeline for planning? \nWhat are the guidelines for deciding on agenda topics? How should time be divided between important current issues facing the school\, cyclical topics like budget and head evaluations\, and longer-term strategic issues? \nHow do you fit in time for board professional development and education? \nHow might agendas vary between day school and boarding school meeting schedules? \nWe hope you will join us in this deep dive conversation on these questions and come with your own agenda questions for Cathy! \nPresented by Cathy Trower\, President\, Trower & Trower \n*Note that published webinar time is Eastern time zone \n\nRegister

SUMMARY:ISCA Webinar: The Future of Education in a Globally Interconnected World
DESCRIPTION:In order for boards to govern effectively\, they must be knowledgeable about the landscape in which independent schools operate – including the educational landscape. Many independent schools are engaging in conversations about the future of education\, including the question of how best to prepare students for a complex\, interconnected\, and often volatile world. Researchers and educators are turning to new research around global competencies – the knowledge\, skills\, and dispositions students need to thrive and contribute as ethical global citizens. As schools consider ways to increase student development of these skills through various learning experiences and initiatives\, from connecting students with global partners to engaging students with local issues of global significance\, board members can support the school’s strategic thinking and innovation by staying current on the emerging research on the future of teaching and learning in today’s world. \nClare Sisisky\nExecutive Director\, Global Education Benchmark Group\nPostdoctoral Research Fellow\, Klingenstein Center at Teachers College\, Columbia University \n*Note that published event times are Eastern time zone \nRegister

SUMMARY:ISCA Webinar: The Aftermath of the Pandemic - A New Independent School Landscape
DESCRIPTION:The pandemic not only exacerbated some long-term trends that were affecting independent schools\, but also created new ones. Falling birthrates\, changes in enrollment by grade levels\, worker/teacher shortages\, and head turnover are some of the challenges that our industry faces. In addition\, the first half of 2022 characterized by economic signs of strengths mixed with recessionary concerns also brought uncertainty to the current school year. The presence of high inflation can affect family educational choices and schools’ ability to attract and retain staff. To better support the work done by the head and ensure the long-term viability of their schools\, board members need to stay abreast of the changing landscape and understand how these trends may be affecting their schools. \nPresented by Amada Torres\, Vice President\, Studies\, Insights\, and Research\, National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) \n*Note that published event times are Eastern time zone. \nRegister

SUMMARY:ISCA Webinar: Considerations for Head of School Feedback and Evaluation Design
DESCRIPTION:As Board Chairs and Trustees\, one of your most important and often least understood responsibilities is the feedback to and evaluation of your sole employee\, the Head of School. We will explore the “why and how” of timely feedback and thoughtful head evaluation\, and outline key considerations in designing a dynamic process that supports healthy board-head partnership and creates conditions for professional growth and support\, for both Heads and Boards. We will address important questions including: how to set goals and expectations; how and when to gather feedback; who participates in the process; how evaluation and feedback might evolve for new heads versus long-serving heads; and how to balance formative and summative feedback. Finally\, we’ll explore the powerful intersection between head evaluation and board evaluation\, and how an aligned approach for feedback and assessment drives a strong partnership. \nGreenwich Leadership Partners will lead you in a structured conversation to help you develop a process to carefully consider your individual school context and the needs of your Head and Board. \nPresented by Georgy Ann Peluchiwsky\, Partner\, Greenwich Leadership Partners \n*Please note that published event times are Eastern Time \n \nRegister\n

SUMMARY:ISCA Webinar: Decision Making in Times of Uncertainty
DESCRIPTION:There is no shortage of sources of uncertainty in the world. Unfortunately\, many organizations find the overwhelming amount of uncertainty debilitating. It completely stymies their efforts to make decisions and move their organizations forward. By understanding uncertainty and the different types of ambiguity we face\, boards can take action sooner or at least make plans to act once the ambiguity is resolved. This approach accelerates decision making and enables boards and administration to position themselves for action\, gather the right information they need to make informed decisions\, and manage risks inherent in the decisions they’ll make. Join nationally recognized leadership expert\, Mike Figliuolo of thoughtLEADERS for this timely webinar and learn the principles of how to make strategic decisions amidst uncertainty. \nPresented by Mike Figliuolo\, Managing Director\, thoughtLEADERS\, LLC. \n*Note that published event times are Eastern Time \nRegister

SUMMARY:ISCA Webinar: What Every Board Should Know About Bylaws
DESCRIPTION:A private school’s bylaws are a foundational governance document and should be routinely and systematically updated for compliance with applicable laws and best practices.  Bylaws will ideally include provisions on topics such as the powers held by the Board of Trustees; how trustees and officers are selected for their roles and removed therefrom; how Board meetings are called and conducted; steps required for the Board to act on matters brought before it; committee mandates; the Head of School’s role on the Board; how trustees can protect themselves from potential liability in connection with their service; and lessons learned from the COVID-19 climate. \nSara Goldsmith Schwartz\, Founder and President of the law firm Schwartz Hannum PC\, will facilitate a lively\, interactive webinar about how to update a private school’s bylaws\, including issues raised by the COVID-19 pandemic\, and how bylaws intersect with the policies required by IRS Form 990. \n*Note that published program times are ET \nRegister

SUMMARY:ISCA Webinar: Who Decides?...And How Do You Decide Who Decides?
DESCRIPTION:If your board and administration are bumping up against boundaries about what decisions are in the Head/staff domain\, whic are shared fairly equally\, and whcih are mostly for the Board to decide\, you are not alone! In fact\, where to draw lines between governance/Board and operations/management used to be simpler. \nIn today’s complex\, and sometime chaotic world\, the lines are blurrier. Because the issues schools are facing are becoming increasingly politicized\, charged with emotion\, and potentially divisive\, there has perhaps never been a better time to think about and discuss who decides and how you decide who decides –the focus of this webinar. \nPresented by Dr. Cathy Trower\, Principal and President\, Trower & Trower\, Inc. \n*Note that published event times are Eastern Time \nRegister

SUMMARY:ISCA Webinar: People and Perimeter - Defining School Safety and Security
DESCRIPTION:What is the Board’s role in ensuring that their school is safe and secure? \nDelivering on your moral and fiduciary responsibilities to both protect people and safeguard assets is no longer just the purview of school leadership and the insurance carrier. SUMMARY:ISCA Webinar: Appointing an Interim Head of School: When? Why? How?
DESCRIPTION:Every governing body should be prepared to appoint an interim leader\, whether it is part of a long-term succession plan or as a risk-management strategy. This webinar will start with the decision to appoint a short-term leader: When does it make the most sense and what are the potential costs and benefits? Then we’ll talk about how and where schools find interim heads based on their circumstances and timing. How does an interim search compare to – and connect with – the search for a long-term appointee? Finally\, we’ll share some tips for making the most of an interim’s tenure. What can a board do to maximize excitement and confidence among all stakeholders through an extended leadership transition? \nPresented by Jo Butler and Zachary White\, Butler/White Strategies \n*Note that published event times are Eastern time zone \nRegister

SUMMARY:ISCA Webinar: Inclusivity in Fundraising - The Board's Role
DESCRIPTION:A strong culture and a clearly articulated approach to diversity\, equity\, and inclusion (DEI) are essential\, in both the short and long-term\, if schools hope to achieve ambitious fundraising goals. As schools seek to advance their mission\, a focus on DEI is not only the right thing to do\, it is critical in motivating prospective donors and inspiring greater philanthropy. In that context\, how can Boards ensure inclusive fundraising practices at their school? DEI\, as it relates to fundraising\, can start with establishing values and policies that shape how a school engages with its constituents. How\, for example\, are fundraising practices perceived by different constituent groups? Given the inherently exclusive nature of fundraising\, how can the Board help to create both a culture of DEI\, and fundraising programs that reflect those values in support of the school’s mission and priorities? \nIn this session\, you will have the opportunity to ask hard questions\, to learn from your peers\, and to reflect on ways that you can lead your school that will result in more inclusive fundraising practices and\, ultimately\, greater philanthropic support. \nPresented by: Bob Weston (CCS Practice Lead\, Independent Schools)\, Polly Breit (CCS Vice President) and An Nguyen (CCS Vice President) \n*Note that published event times are Eastern time zone \nRegister
