Two at the Helm: Could a Co-Chair Model Strengthen Board Leadership?

May 5, 2026 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm EDT

The role of the board chair continues to grow in complexity and responsibility. While most boards rely on a single chair to guide governance and support the Head of School, some organizations are experimenting with co-chair leadership models that share leadership responsibilities and strengthen board capacity.

In this session, T. Clark Durant of Noble Partners Consulting will explore the concept of leadership partnerships for board chairs—a model that emphasizes learning and leading “shoulder to shoulder” rather than in isolation. Participants will consider how shared leadership can help build stronger boards, support succession planning, and create more resilient governance structures.

This conversation will examine when co-leadership models may be effective, how responsibilities can be structured, and what boards should consider before adopting a shared leadership approach.
