Renewing a Head of School’s contract is one of the most consequential responsibilities a Board Chair holds. While the process can feel transactional or complex, it is fundamentally an opportunity to strengthen the Chair–Head partnership, reinforce shared priorities, and ensure long-term leadership stability for the school.

In this session, Board Chairs will gain clarity and confidence in leading the renewal process with their Head of School. Pete Commons, an experienced attorney who has negotiated hundreds of Head of School contracts nationwide, will share practical strategies that elevate the process from a negotiation to a strategic collaboration—balancing support for the Head with the protections and sustainability the school requires.

Participants will learn how to initiate and structure these conversations, identify the right time to engage legal counsel, and navigate key contract logistics to ensure a smooth, transparent, and well-governed process.
