New HOS Appointment Contracts: Laying the Groundwork for Success

Appointing a new Head of School is a pivotal leadership moment—one that sets the tone for the Head’s success and the school’s future stability. For Board Chairs currently engaged in a search, or anticipating one in the coming years, knowing how to manage the process and establish a strong, well-designed employment agreement from the outset is essential.

In this session, Board Chairs will learn how to thoughtfully develop and negotiate the initial Head of School contract to support a smooth transition and a productive partnership. Pete Commons, a seasoned attorney who has advised on hundreds of Head contracts, will provide clarity on your role as Chair throughout the process.  He will share how and when to involve the search firm and legal counsel, and how to structure a term sheet and final agreement—whether the candidate is internal or external. Practical guidance will be offered on timing, expectations, collaboration with the Head-elect, and navigating common contract considerations to ensure alignment from day one.
